Malaysia: The Indispensable Middle in Global Trade

We were honoured to host YB Liew Chin Tong, Deputy Minister of Finance, for a dialogue with business and industry leaders in Melaka. The session explored Malaysia’s fiscal outlook, economic policies, and key issues shaping the business community.

YB Liew underscored Malaysia’s strategic role as the “indispensable middle” in global trade and supply chains. He emphasized the need for Malaysian companies to move beyond pass‑through trade functions — such as ordering from China and supplying goods to the US and Europe — and instead invest in R&D, add value to products, and move up the global value chain.

He highlighted opportunities for industries to leverage existing strengths, such as Melaka’s semiconductor capabilities, to diversify into sectors like medical devices and counter‑drone systems. YB Liew also stressed the importance of building interconnected state‑level ecosystems — with Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Johor, and Melaka complementing one another — to serve regional consumers more effectively.

This call to reposition reflects Malaysia’s ambition to strengthen competitiveness and seize opportunities in the evolving global economy. In the spirit of Merdeka, the discussion was a timely reminder of our collective responsibility to build a stronger, more resilient nation.
